GF-5: Grid Computing Environments

Grid Computing Environments Working Group
Grid Forum 5 Plans/information
Meeting Date: October 16-18, 2000, Boston, MA

Greetings fellow CGE'rs!

Finally, we are getting near the next Grid Forum meeting,
which is promising to be a good one: the list of attendees
is possibly larger than any previous meeting, there will
be Jini and XML training classes, and of course the GCE
working group will be meeting for the first time as an
offcial working group.

In preparation for this, we were asked to prepare our materials
early and hand them over to Charlie Catlett for inclusion in
a handout package for all attendees. This done, I decided to send
this to you all early, so you would be able to start thinking
about what CGE means to you, and what you want/think/feel GCE
can do for the Grid Forum and your work.

Below, I have included the cover sheet, agenda, and an initial
summary of what I think that we need to do, along with explanations
about what is included. Note: the material is neither inclusive
of _all_ possible GCE related projects/information/architectures/papers,
neither is it exclusive of any of these. It's just our attempt to
seed the meetings with some common grounds and to get you thinking.

In particular, please look at the included workshop summary Part 4a
(Compting Portals, 1998). In this workshop, the approach looks very
similar to what were discussing/planning to do at GF4, but for a larger
range of activities. So I ask you: can we still use this material?
Is it still current? Or, do we modify it and update it, or have things
changed so much that we need to scrap it and start over?

In addition we ask that you think of other relevant websites, papers,
summaries, etc. and bring that information to the workshops as a
contribution
to our body of knowledge.

We will be looking for help with this group, in the form of a webmaster
and a secretary. Please contact me if you are interested and we can
discuss this at GF5.

Introduction and Goals for Grid Forum 5

History:
A BOF was held at the last Grid Forum meeting (GF5, Seattle, WA) to discuss
the formation of a working group that will focus on the requirements of Grid
computing environments, which includes Grid activities such as web portals,
PSE’s, and shell environments, and others. Since then, we have begun
forming the working group and we are now ready for interested parties to
participate. The mailing list has been formed, and a rough draft of the
charter has been started

GF5 Goals:
We have 2 main tasks to accomplish at GF5: finalizing a charter and then
beginning the process of writing the initial GCE white paper that will
define what we intend for this group to be, what we will do for the next
year, and how we will do this. This document will serve as our mission
statement and will help us set goals for ourselves, the Grid Forum and the
Global Grid Forum Groups.

Primary Tasks:
1)	Define for ourselves what are Grid Computing Environments
2)	Define what GCE’s try to do and how they accomplish these things
3)	Categorize these GCE tasks by function (or other view), and determine how
they relate back to activities defined by the other Grid Forum working
groups.
4)	Identify mechanisms for feedback to other working groups.

We have included some starter material in order to give us all a common
framework from which to proceed. This reference material includes the
proceedings from the workshops conducted by the working groups at Computing
Portals/Datorr. For GCE::Portals, this will be very useful. For other
GCEs, their work can serve as a reference. The selected lists of projects
were included to ‘jog’ your memory and serve as discussion material for
developing a list of Grid Computing Environments.

The materials provided in these handouts are by no means inclusive of all
Grid projects and are not intentionally exclusive of any projects.

As we define types of GCE’s and categories of tasks, technologies, etc., we
need to also check what tasks and definitions other working groups are
defining. Can we use those objects/models? If yes, how? If not, what is
it that is needed by a GCE and how do we pass this information back to the
working group. Like all the other working groups, this is an iterative
process.
